Vinyl acetate short for Vinyl acetate monomer(VAM), is a colorless and transparent liquid with a sweet ethereal smell; slightly soluble in water, soluble in various organic solvents such as alcohol, acetone, benzene, and chlorine. The relative density of vinyl acetate is 0.93, the boiling point is 71.8°C, the flash point is 18°C, the freezing point is 193°C, and the auto-ignition point is 427°C. Its vapor can form an explosive mixture with air, and the explosion limit in air is 2.6-13.4% (volume). Contacting with open flame and high heat, it will cause combustion and explosion.

Vinyl acetate has active chemical properties, and undergoes addition reactions with halogens, hydrogen halides, halogenated hydrocarbons, phenols, ammonia, mercaptans, hydrogen acids, amines, etc.. Under the action of inorganic acids, salts, and alkalis, it is rapidly hydrolyzed to form acetic acid and acetaldehyd. It will polymerize under the action of heat, light or trace amount of peroxide and azo, even if the vinyl acetate containing inhibitor contacts with peroxide, it will polymerize violently. It can copolymerize with ethylene, vinyl chloride, acrylic acid , crotonic acid, maleic acid and other unsaturated acids.

Application

Vinyl acetate is a basic organic chemical raw material with a wide range of uses, mainly used in the production of polyvinyl alcohol resin, EVA resin, EVOH resin, polyvinyl butyral resin, synthetic fiber, VAE emulsion, VAC homopolymer emulsion, etc. Its poly and copolymers can be used to produce adhesives for many purposes. Vinyl acetate is widely used in textiles, coatings, adhesives, films, medicine, organic synthesis, fine chemicals, and daily chemicals.
